You can blame the snake from now until the cows come home, but the real reason sin entered into the world was because of the disobedience of the first two people – Adam and Eve. And if any of us think we could have done better, we only need to think back to the last time we blew it and then humbly appealed to God’s grace. Here is a retelling of this great Bible story of this sad time in history of mankind to help your children become familiar with this point of God’s amazing history… Adam and Eve’s garden home was beautiful. Adam and Eve were always peaceful and happy because of all the wonderful things God had created just for them. But they were especially joyful because God was their best friend. If God is your best friend, that means you love him and trust Him. It also means you will obey Him because He knows what is always best for you. God knew what was best for Adam and Eve too. He gave them rules to follow to keep them safe in His love. One of the rules God told them was this: “You may eat the fruit of all the trees in the garden except one. In the middle of the garden grows a tree with fruit upon it that you must not eat and you must not touch. If you eat of the fruit upon that tree, you will die.” God expected Adam and Eve to follow this rule. But one day, a serpent came along who was very sneaky and who did not love God. He didn’t want Adam and Eve to love or obey God either. One day he tricked Eve and said, “Did God tell you that there is a certain kind of fruit you may not eat?” Eve said, “We are allowed to eat the fruit of any tree except of the tree that stands in the middle of the garden. If we eat that fruit, God says we will die.” “You will not die,” said the serpent. “God knows that if you eat of the fruit of that tree, you will become wise like God and will know what is good and evil.” Eve listened to the serpent. She looked at the tree in the middle of the garden. She began to wonder how delicious the fruit must be. And if the serpent were right, the fruit would also make her wise. Eve wanted to be wise and know as much as God knows. So, she made the decision to disobey God and eat the fruit she was not allowed to eat. She even gave some of it to Adam and he ate some of it also. How very sad. Adam and Eve disobeyed God and knew that they had made the wrong choice. For the first time in their lives they were afraid to be with their best friend, God. They were sad and God was sad. Questions: 1. Who was Adam and Eve’s best friend? (Answer: God.) 2. What was the rule God gave to Adam and Eve? (Answer: They were not allowed to eat the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden.) 3. Who tricked Eve into eating the fruit and disobeying God?
